All of that is true in the loosest possible sense. None of it has a date attached to it yet.
Something else does. Sunnylands Center & Gardens closes every summer and reopens on a fixed Wednesday, and this year that Wednesday is September 9, 2026. Two days from today. That's the actual season marker, the one thing on the calendar you can plan a Saturday around right now instead of sometime this fall, whenever that turns out to mean.
The distinction matters more than it sounds like it should, because it tells you which fall-2026 stories to act on this week and which ones to just keep half an eye on through the holidays.
The One Date That's Actually Fixed
Sunnylands' nine-acre gardens hold more than 53,000 arid-adapted plants along 1.25 miles of walking paths, and they're free to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting the moment the gates reopen. The returning exhibition is Curating Canopy: Trees at Sunnylands, and the Thursday morning birding walks, 8:45 a.m., run November through May with no reservation required.
If you've been putting off a Sunnylands morning because the summer heat made the gardens feel more theoretical than walkable, this is the window. The first two weeks after a reopening are historically the quietest stretch of the entire season, and the cooler mornings that typically arrive by mid-September are exactly when 1.25 miles of desert-adapted planting is worth the walk rather than an endurance test.
One thing to flag before you build a whole Sunday around it: Sunnylands is still an active convening venue, and programs can be canceled on short notice when a high-level retreat is scheduled. That much is confirmed. What isn't confirmed yet is a specific day-one date, which is the detail that separates a real plan from a placeholder on next year's calendar.
The first phase has four named tenants. Elevare is an 8,000-square-foot waterfront restaurant serving American cuisine with lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, operated by Oak View Group and designed by Ignisio Studios. On the Mark Fine Foods & Provisions is expanding into a space more than twice the size of its Palm Springs store, with room to sit down and plans to sell both produce and meat, not just prepared food. Khaga Yoga rounds out the wellness piece. And Artigiano, a Canadian coffee brand, is opening its first location anywhere in the United States here rather than in Los Angeles or Scottsdale, which says something about how the developer is pitching this site to national tenants.
A second wave landed on August 6, 2026, when Storyliving announced six more names for the collection: Asada Cantina + Kitchen, Mojave Flea Trading Post, an Italian concept called SottoSopra from the team behind SottoVoce Cafe in Palm Desert and Palm Springs, La Dolce Piccola Gelateria, and two more. Those six are scheduled for spring 2027, not this fall. That's the part the season-preview posts tend to blur together with the first four names, and it's worth keeping straight if you're deciding when to actually plan a visit versus when to just note it and move on.
Here's the piece that changes who actually gets to use any of this on a Tuesday night. Rancho Mirage banned short-term rentals citywide effective July 1, 2022, under Municipal Code Section 17.30.270(B), and that ban applies inside Cotino too. A town center attached to a no-STR community means its weeknight customer base is residents, not weekend renters cycling through on a three-night stay. The menu leans California-meets-Italy with a nod to the valley's date-farm history, and one dish worth trying is the Campanelle al Limone, made with asparagus and roasted tomatoes. Dinner runs 5 to 10 p.m. daily, and live entertainment is programmed in the plaza five nights a week, Wednesday through Sunday, which is more nights than most desert resorts bother committing to. It's built, deliberately, to be a place locals treat as a regular reservation rather than something reserved for hotel guests.
Then there's the filing that hasn't been confirmed by anyone. If you've driven Highway 111 through Rancho Mirage, you've seen the empty pad at 71959 CA-111, dark since Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine closed there in 2021. More than a dozen construction documents were filed earlier this year, describing a conversion of the existing building into a 9,260-square-foot full-service fine dining restaurant with a 316-guest occupancy limit and 275 seats, with the project listed as being in the construction bidding phase at the time those documents surfaced. Public reporting has pointed toward a possible Capital Grille location, but Darden Restaurants has said only that the company doesn't comment on specific projects until they've cleared approvals. Treat that one as a real signal worth watching, not an announcement.

- Confirmed and open now: Double Date at the Omni, dinner 5 to 10 p.m., live music five nights a week.
- Confirmed with a season but no exact date: Cotino's first four tenants, opening fall 2026.
